About The Regional Australia Institute

Independent. Fact driven. Future focused.

The Regional Australia Institute (RAI) is the nation’s first and only independent think tank dedicated to building robust regional economies.

Independent and informed by both research and ongoing dialogue with the community, the RAI develops policy solutions and advocates for change to build a stronger economy and a better quality of life in regional Australia – for the benefit of all Australians.

The RAI is a non-partisan, not-for-profit organisation, founded in 2011 with seed money from the Australian Government. The RAI is a public company limited by guarantee and an approved research institute for tax purposes.

Today, RAI funding comes from research partnerships with federal and state governments, the Regions Rising event series, regional consultancy projects, membership and philanthropic funding.

By replacing myth and stereotype with facts and knowledge, the RAI builds bridges between city and country Australians.

We care about the regions, because when our regions are strong, Australia is strong.

If you share our passion for regional Australia, consider working with us.

Our Purpose.

To empower regions to thrive.

Our Vision.

Empowered regions where people enjoy the opportunity and quality of life equal to all Australians.

Our Mission.

As Australia’s only independent think tank focused on regional issues we seek to:

  • Build and grow sustainably for the future.
  • Deliver our trusted research and elevate policy solutions.
  • Activate our research through impact projects and education.
  • Lead a national Regionalisation Ambition over the next 10 years.
  • Development and deepen membership and partnerships.

About Rebalance the Nation

The Regional Australia Institute (RAI) is the nation’s first and only independent think tank dedicated to building robust regional economies.

Rebalance the Nation is driving more Australians to live prosperous lives in our regions.

Today, nearly two thirds of our population live in major cities, and we are one of the most urbanised OECD country.

RAI and global research tell us that a more balanced population will makes us a more prosperous and productive nation.

To rebalance and reap benefits for all Australians, we need to focus on regionalisation and address issues and challenges in regional Australia so that people can thrive.
