Sheree sells craft and jewellery supplies online. It’s not her full-time job, but she has done an incredible job of making it work by relying on the internet to find new customers – not just in WA but all over the world. She now exports to every state in Australia and has shipped orders from Merredin to customers in the UK, Mexico, Bulgaria and Canada. She also helps other jewellers online by posting ‘how to’ tips. As Sheree says, “without the internet Wheatbelt Beads simply would not be possible”. She says that her business is a way of hedging against agricultural risks such as a bad rainfall. Her ultimate aim is that, financed by internet-driven exports, she can grow to the point that she can open up a physical shopfront in Merredin and offer the town more diversity in its otherwise struggling local business ecosystem. Although the business is (in Sheree’s own words) ‘small fry’, it is still a patron of two local charities (Western Reptile Rescue and Hands for Earth).
