Penny Evans Art | pennyevansart.com | Lismore, NSW
Penny Evans is a visual artist based in the Lismore, New South Wales producing unique ceramics, collaged works on paper, prints and mixed media.
Penny’s pieces each feature concepts relating to her identity through a decolonising process; learning about her Aboriginal heritage.
Her work references her Kamilaroi/Gomeroi Aboriginal cultural heritage, in combination with her personal evolving graphic style.
Sgraffito technique is a strong feature and links to Gomeroi traditions of carving into trees, weapons, utensils as well as ground carving for ceremonial purposes, communications and storytelling. Her works on paper examine more recent histories such as dispossession and the politics of identity in Australia.
Since attending the Regional Online Heroes Masterclass, Penny says her business has exploded. She has substantially increased her social media following and the number of visitors to her website. She was also named a finalist in the 2017 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA), and has featured in a number of publications and broadcasts, including ABC Open and the Qantas Spirit of Australia magazine. Her business has become so busy, she is looking to take on an assistant.
